The secret to getting excited for your daily shower

Let's all face it. There are a lot more fun things to do than to shower. Especially for us girls that have long hair, it can also be time consuming! But showering is necessary, and so why not make it something you look forward to? The secret is to make it luxurious, make it a space you want to be in. And the way to do that is to add a fun tile detail for your shower surround.

When we first moved into our home, our guest bathroom only had an Americast tub with a small tile splash and sheet rock above to the ceiling. No shower head and some super cute wallpaper that just had to go. We knew right away that we needed to add a shower head to make it a tub/shower combo, and then could easily add a fun tile surround.

The first thing to do was to rip out all the old tile and sheetrock. Once the wall was opened and the plumbing was exposed, it was easy to run plumbing up the wall to add a shower head. My entire family is super tall (I'm the shortest, to give you an idea!), and so we placed our shower head to be at seven feet. This is a great design element to make your shower to feel more grand and if you have tall genes in your family!

Once the plumbing was in place, we added the diamond backer board to create a sturdy foundation for the tile and waterproof the shower. The other nice part is that the diamond backer board cuts like Sheetrock and so you only need a razor blade and a straight edge.

Once all the diamond backer board was in place, we started on the tile installation! (cue the fun part) We used Mastik for the tile setting, and a tile snapper to make all of our cuts. This is the first time I have ever used a tile snapper, and it was the most amazing purchase we have made. It saves you lots of time, and is a lot cleaner to use. I would highly recommend purchasing one for small tile projects (backsplashes, simple tile surrounds). We purchased ours from Harbor Freight and have been really happy with it.

Doing all of these remodel projects in my own home, living with them, and having hands-on experience has helped me know what products to recommend and feel that it has made me a better designer. Even though it is hard work, it is so worth it! And now I use this shower more than the one in our master bathroom. Tile surrounds make such an impact and design statement and are must-haves when it comes to bathrooms! We are doing a fun surprise with the design for the rest of this bathroom and am excited to show you the final reveal once it's all done! Stay tuned to see the full bathroom design that will be shared at the end of this month.

Andrea

  1. Amazing ideas. I have just moved into a new apartment and am looking to renovate the master bathroom as well as my en-suite shower room. My bathroom had the exact same wallpaper!
I was thinking of using plain white tiles but now I'm thinking maybe I should get some fun and color in there - liven up my shower times!
