How to pick the perfect artwork for your space + Andrea's current favorite art picks

Hey friends! I hope you all had a wonderful Easter weekend. I always love this time of year with the fresh blooms and fresh starts. It's the perfect time to renew.. well, everything! And your home is the best place to start.

My favorite way to update a space is to add or change up my artwork. Art has such a powerful effect in your space, and can really make or break the design vibe you are trying to achieve. Here are a few tips to help you pick out the best artwork for your space!

1. Stay within your color palette: Okay, so you are doing a room with blues, pinks, and golds. Find a piece of art that ties all these colors together, or compliments it in some way. Artwork is a great way to make colors in your space look intentional, and to pull it all together.

2. Tell the story of your space: Decide what you want people to feel when they are in your space. Do you want it to feel more farmhouse? More glam, or edgy? Once you know the emotion behind the space, you can use your artwork to pull your design towards a certain style to really help get the feel across. This is a great way to incorporate non-abstract artwork such as prints and portraits.

3. Consider the scale: This one is huge! It is such an important tip to remember when selecting your art and I cannot emphasize it enough! Take a look at your space. Do you have a lot of little things? (Small accent chairs, side tables, lamps) Do you have a rug that has a small, intricate pattern? If so, you will want to select a piece of art that has a LARGE scale to balance out the space. If you have large pieces in your space such as a large sectional, heavier furniture pieces and a subtle rug, then you can go busier and more dramatic with your art. You want the two to compliment and work together, and one of the ways is to balance out the scale of your room. This also applies to the size of your wall. If you have a large wall, fill it! Go large with your art. Bigger is better.

In this room design, the floor pattern is large and so the artwork pattern is a smaller scale. This scale technique is the reason why these two busy patterns compliment each other.

 4. Determine the focal point of the space: This goes hand in hand with all the other tips, but you want to decide what you want the focal point in your space will be and then go from there. The artwork can either add or detract, or become the focal point. Envision where you want the eye to go first, and then build from there.

With this space, we wanted the art to be the focal point with the rest of the bathroom design being so calm and neutral. We used the art to make a statement and bring the eye to the pops of color.

5. Go with you gut: Sometimes, art just speaks to you. You will know it when it does. All the sudden no other art holds a candle to it, and you have to have it. When this happens, make sure it fits in your space and go for it! The art pieces I have purchased when I have "fallen in love" and just neeeeeeded to have it are still my favorite to this day.

I like this room because it is so soft and neutral. If you know you like neutrals and have an entire room filled with neutral pieces, don't worry if a neural piece of art speaks to you! That is how you define your personal style. Listen to yourself and go with what you love.

Here are my favorite artwork picks that I have been loving lately. I am really loving the defined abstracts (yes there is such thing haha), black and white sketches, and transitioning to some softer modern pieces. What have you been loving lately?

All artwork is available to order through Andrea West Design

Can't wait to see how you update your home with your favorite artwork!

Xoxo,
Andrea
