Modern Mountain Side | Before & Afters!
I'm pretty sure before and after posts are my fav... there is no better way to see the results of hard work and career satisfaction than looking at where you began, and how it looks when its all done! This is how it was on our entire Modern Mountain Side project... the home had been built when maroon shag carpet (including baseboards), dark walls and cabinets, and pink marble hearths were a thing.... and it all HAD. TO. GO. After a little vision and some sweat, we had an amazing transformation:
Here's the living room before... It had pink carpet, swirly pink marble on the fireplace, brown walls with a darker brown accent wall, and some weird yellow brick on the fireplace with shiny brass accents. Overall, the space felt small, cramped, and dark.
And here's the after... doesn't even feel like the same space, right?
Our Modern Mountain Side had huge potential, but needed a little love. Here's our step-by-step "love list" that gave our remodel some traction:
Modern Mountain Side Must-Haves:
1. Wood flooring throughout to open up the space
2. Lighter, more updated wall paint color
3. Reconfigure furniture floor plan to better utilize the space
4. Floor to ceiling window drapes to emphasize scale and height of room
5. Fireplace face-lift: Repaint brick and marble hearth to lighten space and create focal point
First thing we did was to remove the pink carpet... having that removed already made a huge difference! After all the carpet was removed, we painted the entire floor with KILLZ. I recommend this for every remodel to ensure you have a clean and sanitized slate to start.
Next was the fireplace. It had great bones, but just needed a little sprucing up! Having a stone slab hearth seat and mantle ledge was a huge bonus, but the marble they selected was a dated form of sherbet. We didn't want to completely remove the marble, and so we found a solution that was both cost effective, and not super labor intensive. This beautiful solution is called EPOXY! We used a spray paint version of it from Home Depot you can see here.
And there you have it! Love this living room now that it feels light, open, and airy. It has become one of our favorite places to lounge and relax. For more pictures and sources of the Modern Mountain Side project, go to the full reveal here.
Xoxo,
Andrea

My favorite handyman.. love him! |
While all the flooring was out, we painted the walls and then had the wood flooring installed! Here it is right after the install was complete:

And here's the fireplace after! Such a huge difference, and love the white painted brick that keeps the traditional charm and updates the space.

Any specifics you can share about the painting the surround black?
ReplyDeleteHi Allison! We used a matte black spray paint that was heat resistant. We taped off the area around and sprayed away! We found the spray paint at Home Depot as well. Hope that helps!
